Two hours later, Timothy Williams still wouldn’t tell them anything other than some “rich-looking stranger” approached him in a bar about twenty miles up the road and asked him if he’d like to make some spending money.

“I said sure,” Timothy told them, his beady eyes full of woe each time he glanced up at Shane in the big, shadowy office at the back of the house. “He took me to this hotel room and showed me the file he had on me. That dude knew everything about me, good and bad. He offered me ten thousand dollars and told me if I didn’t do exactly as he said, he’d get me thrown back into prison on some trumped-up charge. Said he’d make sure they found drugs in my apartment.”

“What else can you tell us?” Shane asked, his patience wearing very thin.

“That’s it, man,” Timothy insisted. “He gave me the instructions. Put on the wig and mustache and go to this place out in the middle of nowhere. Gave me the exact location but I got lost anyway. Told me to find the woman, scare her then leave the phone by the back door where you’d be sure to find it. Never seen a place so hard to find, especially the way he had me come in on the other side of the river. Just got lucky, seeing her at the kitchen window. I was gonna drop the phone and get out of here.”

“Describe this man to me one more time,” Shane said, glancing over at where Kit sat nursing a cup of strong coffee. She was quiet, too quiet. And she looked exhausted, her usually vivid green eyes slanting down in a forest-like darkness.

“I told you, man. He was tall with reddish-brown hair cut close to his head. He wore a fancy suit and didn’t even break a sweat, even when he was telling me exactly what might happen to me if I messed up.” He shrugged, bent his head down. “And now, I’ve done that. I was supposed to report back to him—”

He stopped, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he lowered his eyes, his gaze shuttered again.

Shane grabbed him, yanking him up and out of the chair. “Where and when?”

Timothy shook his head. “No, man. I can’t tell you. He’ll kill me.”

“And I’ll kill you if you don’t,” Shane said, his deadly tone full of a calm intent. He’d had enough for one night.

Timothy’s fear palpitated throughout his skinny frame, causing him to tremble. “I can’t do that. He’s dangerous. He made it clear what would happen to me—”

“Perhaps I haven’t made myself clear then,” Shane said, his hand still on Timothy’s torn, dirty shirt. “I can do just as much damage to your good name, my friend. And I can make things much worse than your mysterious employer ever promised you.” He leaned close, so close he could smell the fear radiating off Timothy’s scrawny body. “I know this place, far away, where we send people who don’t cooperate with us.
